Interesting. I grew up reading Enid Blyton, so "hols" is definitely
"holidays" for me. :-) As for it being completely unknown on this
continent... I'm not sure, it seems to be quite a natural contraction of
"holidays" to me.

Hmm. Reminds me of how careful one must be during an auction... scratch
your head, and you just spent $5000 on some useless item. Clear your
throat and you just bought a $10,000 item. Stand up to leave and suddenly
your life savings is left on the chair. ;-)
