In fact, I myself am living, breathing evidence that
children do NOT need a highly structured learning
environment. I was home educated, and essentially
taught myself through reading, talking to people,
asking questions, simply following my interests.
Almost the only times I had formal instruction as a
child was when I felt I needed some. It certainly
hasn't caused me any problems; I'm currently doing
extremely well at university, and have a keen eye for
typos and misspellings. (Not trying to boast here.)
On the topic of grammar teaching in school, I was
appalled to see my sister's grade twelve teacher had
taught her "grammar" that was just plain wrong! He
called things like "to go" prepositional phrases, for
instance, as well as completely messing up the
definitions of compound and complex clauses (part of
old-fashioned English grammar).
