Since 9/11 the Statue has been closed to visitors, although it is still
possible to take the ferry to Liberty Island and see it close up (and a fine
place for a picnic it is too, weather permitting). In the pedestal, there is
a museum of the construction and renovation, which is closed; in addition,
it was also possible to climb the spiral staircase to the crown. Access
to the torch was by ladder, and has been closed to the public since about 1920.
But still she lifts her lamp beside the Golden Door.
