"Gevey" is the English term for "gevye, ye geveey", which translates
as (very roughly) the settlement among the water meadows (gevuu, yuu
gev meaning water meadows). So, the settlement gave its name to the
city (Gevile), which gave its name to the people, which in turn gave
its name to the language they speak.
