There's a magazine called Mangajin (or at least there was, I haven't
seen it in a while) that used comics for teaching the Japanese language.
A page or strip of Japanese manga would be juxtaposed with a translation
of the dialogue and other text, separated into numbered boxes
corresponding to the panels of the comic. A box would consist of lines
attributed to the speakers (or "sound effect"), and under each line of
Japanese would be a line of romanization, one of word-by-word
translations, and finally a line of idiomatic English translation. It's
a very interesting and effective system. Terrence's Kadanë cartoon uses
that system (incidentally, I think Mangajin is where I first saw that
strip).
