I seem to recall that somewhere, someone proposed St. Isidore of Seville,
who wrote a lot about etymologies.
But most of his etymologies* are ludicrously wrong, and he was a dreadful
anti-Semite to boot.
*(Vulpes 'fox' < volo 'fly', pes 'foot' is typical.)
