What Unix are you running? If you're running a recent
version of Linux (2.2+, I believe), and install a recent
(similar era) version of console-tools, you can type
unicode_start at the console, and it will accept UTF-8.
The largest console fonts are only 512 glyphs (console bug),
but that's enough for a large chunk of Latin and Cyrillic.
