Sorry 'bout the lateness of this -- paper-writing and illness have kept me away from it. Generally speaking, the lang is an sonorous one; it reminds me of Tolkien's languages. One thing that seems unusual, from the perspective of natlangs, is how the ergative encodes *both* agent and goal, two thematic roles which tend never to be encode in the same case in the same language. If you're looking for case syncretism with the ergative, merging it with the instrumental is IMO the way to go. That's quite common cross-linguistically. ========================================================================= Thomas Wier "I find it useful to meet my subjects personally, Dept. of Linguistics because our secret police don't get it right University of Chicago half the time." -- octogenarian Sheikh Zayed of 1010 E. 59th Street Abu Dhabi, to a French reporter.
