In my high school, we were taught a generalized Central American Spanish (a conlang of sorts?) -- the sort that leaves native speakers from all parts of Latin America scratching their head and asking where exactly your teacher was from. (My teacher was from Pittsburgh. *g*) I have friends from Spain who speak Castilian Spanish to me, and I wouldn't dream of telling them how odd it sounds to my ears. Of course, that isn't just a side effect of education-- I hear many different varieties of Spanish from this hemisphere spoken around me in public all the time.
