Don't forget, you can use _suru_ with a direct object as well.
Boku ga denwa o shimashita.
"I used the telephone.", "I called."
Other examples:
Sensei ga kenkyuu-suru.
"The teacher does research."
Sensei ga kenkyuu o suru.
"The teacher does research."
Sensei ga gengogaku o kenkyuu-suru.
"The teacher does research on linguistics."
BUT
*Sensei ga gengogaku o kenykuu o suru.
