I came across an interesting illustration of this when I first began
to celebrate Mass in Spanish.

In Spanish the "proper" word for 'to drink' is 'beber.'
However, 'tomar,' 'to take' is more commonly used.

At the consecration in the Mass the phrases 'take and eat' and 'take
and drink' occur.

The first is easy: 'tomad y comed' is used.

But the second? 'tomad y bebed' is used.

BTW, the Mexican bishops' conference has recently announced that the
Usted forms can be used in place of the vosotros forms.
