Tristan scripsit:
> (What do they call this sausage in Germany? Or the rest of the world,
> for that matter. For clarification, it's 'a spiced sausage of pork, veal
> etc.' or 'a large smooth, bland sausage, usually sliced thinly and eaten
> cold'.)
This description is just too vague to go on: it could describe bologna,
except for the detail that bologna is not German. There are hundreds
(thousands?) of sausages in the world, and Germany surely has more than
its share of them.
I suppose Swiss people think it's bizarre that Americans insist on calling
Emmenthaler (or our imitation thereof) "Swiss", as if there were no other
cheeses from Switzerland. (As for me, my favorite Swiss cheese is Jarlsberg.)

To say that Bilbo's breath was taken away is no description at all. There
are no words left to express his staggerment, since Men changed the language
that they learned of elves in the days when all the world was wonderful.
