Translating large works

The thread on teaching conlangs to children has got me contemplating
translating Snow Crash into Asha'ille.

Now, when I'm doing simple sentence translation exercises or short
passages, I just go through the thing and translate. I'm wondering if
I need to do more planning before diving into translating a full novel
-- anyone here with experience in this realm?
