This question seems to be really difficult. For example, Old Church
Slavonic has *gender* distinction for them: 1 -va, 2-3 -ta for masc.,
vs. 1 -vê, 2-3 -tê for fem. (and neu.?). May be a secondary feature,
by analogy with the nominal endings, but shows what bizarre levellings
could be involved here in individual langs.
