Twenty-odd years ago when I began writing the grammar, I actually
entertained naive notions that it might be publishable to a general (i.e.,
non-conlang) audience, which is why I wrote in a deliberately clear,
layperson-oriented style trying to assume little if any linguistic
knowledge on the part of the reader. I stuck to that style even after
coming to the conclusion that Ithkuil would ultimately only appeal to the
online conlang community, otherwise I would've had to rewrite whole
sections. As for Mr. Cowan's comment on my "illustrious" family, I can
only assume he is making a wry reference to page one of Cervantes' "Don
Quixote" where we learn that the title character's real name is Alonso
Quixada (the older spelling of Quijada). The name is the Spanish word
for "jaw." "Quixote" simply means "big jaw."
