That's because they were not named by Americans!
On another hand, I doubt that a new State would ever be
named for an old place without a qualifier like `New'.
The DC statehood faction plans to call it New Columbia, i hear.
Here's an irony: the territory north of the Columbia River
would have been named Columbia, but it was thought that
confusion might result, with that District in the east.
So what did they name it instead?!
