That's because they were not named by Americans! On another hand, I doubt that a new State would ever be named for an old place without a qualifier like `New'. The DC statehood faction plans to call it New Columbia, i hear. Here's an irony: the territory north of the Columbia River would have been named Columbia, but it was thought that confusion might result, with that District in the east.
