Re: Infinitives

The so-called Traditional Verb System of Jack Durst's in NGL has
no infinitive. It has a "non-past" tense which fullfils some functions of
the infinitive.
I sorely missed the infinitive and put it back in my version of NGL,
vector tense. The infinitive is the tense that can span all timeframes,
along with the gerund. The "necessary" modal is true in all timeframes;
that is a connection between modality and tense. Other than that, I
don't see a necessary :) connection between the infinitive tense and
modality, modality is not a general substitute for the infinitive. So I
would say that if the infinitive is eliminated, some kind of non-finite
ie. multiple time frame concept such as aorist, non-past, or something
else I wouldn't like would have to be used, perhaps in conjunction with
modality. Well, good luck with your lang, if we all thought alike we'd
be on another list.
Best,
Jerry
