Or you might have unconsciously inferred it from
all the text you read, whether for school or on your
own.  I don't remember the details of my elementary
school lessons clearly enough to say for sure, but
I suspect the majority of what I know about
English orthography I picked up osmotically by
reading a lot, not through formal lessons.
