    I think you're referring to Michelle Yeoh.  I think her native language
is Mandarin, and the film was done in Cantonese (though it could be the
other way around).  IIRC she took some quick language lessons and needed a
speech coach on the set during filming.  (This is what I recall her saying
in a brief interview on the red carpet just before the last Academy Awards
show.)
