Because OE is designed for situations like inside corporations,
where as a message gets forwarded and replied to, all the
previous messages in the thread are carried with it,
because almost nobody keeps proper archives of incoming and
outgoing email.

Sure. Switch to Netscape or Eudora. :-)
(I don't know of any way to change OE.)
