I goskan lísu ben (this) (true, authentic) (silk) (neg.Aux 3ps) Note: lísu 'silk' comes from the root liN meaning 'smoothly shiny' which also appears in such words as linqui 'holly' (from the appearance of the leaves), líle 'head of hair', lína 'pool' and so on. Ben is the reduced form of be-na 'is not'. Many monosyllabic constructions with the auxiliary are found, such as nain from na-ni (3ps subject with 3ps object)
> > 2. skirt > I'd like to try on that skirt. (No, I'm not a transvestite.)
A kostu aringora dia medain (that) ((short) skirt) (put - polite imp.) (on-me) (Want -1ps sj - 3ps obj) Note: kostu refers to a short skirt, or the lower half of a tunic worn in warm weather. Indeed the root form is koste 'short'. Medain is the auxiliary me- 'to want to'. Omeina verbs have to include object pronouns even where they are not mentioned as such, so that such constructions have the form 'I saw him, that man' for 'I saw that man'.
> > 3. to need > I need to find a present for my sister.
Alku gúne siludelde didain (present) (find) (sister - my - Dat.) (to have to-I-it) i.e., 'I have to find it, a present for my sister' - see (2) above.
> > 4. stair > The shop is up the stairs and on the left.
Alekila bidea turkua laiori bere gain (shop) (at the top of) (stairs) (left) (see) (Aux.4p-3ps) Notes: 1) Alekila 'shop' has had to be constructed from al-i 'give', the 'reciprocal' suffix -eki and the ending -la meaning 'place where...' 2) Bidea is actually the locative case of bide 'head, top' but also governs the locative of the noun. So turku 'staircase' is also locative. 3) Laiori is from lai-ori 'Westward hand' so the meaning is similar to 'on the left-hand side'. 4) Ga is the 4th person marker, which is needed here because of the construction that Omeina uses. The shop is seen at the top of the stairs... rather than 'is there'. Four's enough! Mike --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
