There is a theory that Nome, Alaska got its name similarly. The city of
Nome is named after nearby Cape Nome. Supposedly, a map draftsman noted that
this cape had at that time no name. He noted "? name" on the map,
which was misread as "C Nome" and interpreted as "Cape Nome".

On the same lines, but sillier IMO:
There's a town somewhere west of Chicago (I think) called "Novi". It originally
grew up around the sixth station on a new railroad that was being / had just
been built.
