TECH: Help needed with perl, cgi, sessions, mysql

In setting up my website I'm, unsuccessfully so far, trying
to get to grips with using cgi, sessions and mysql through
Perl. While I am semi-literate in Perl its all a bit
intimidating, especially as you see all these warnings about
security risks. What are these risks more specifically?
(1) Someone getting hold on data they shouldn't? or
(2)someone doing actual damage on 'my' server?
I'd really appreciate if someone with some experience would
contact me offlist on my other address
(bpj@samedomain.samecountry).
TIA,
/BP 8^)
