That would be true, since French (and Spanish) back vowels are much more rounded than English, which in turn are more rounded than Japanese. No doubt American failure to round sufficiently is one of the factors contributing to the French displeasure with American-spoken French-- along with our /r/, too much aspiration, nasalizing in all the wrong places, pronouncing all those silent letters, inability to handle _u, eu_ etc. or simple words like _feuille_or _fauteuil_..........
