Even in the manga it's extremely complicated. Imagine: four stars, each with
their planets (some inhabitated) and each planet with a multitude of countries,
kingdoms, which make alliances, wars, etc... Add to that the personal history of
a multitude of characters, all this for thousands of years, plus some
interconnections with Earth's history... As I've read, in the beginning of each
manga there is a complete chronology of the system, with all important events
noted and dated (even the ones that didn't happen yet in the manga you have in
hand).

I've heard the same about Akira, so it must be true. Japanese people expect you
to have read the manga before seeing the anime. Still, while I had never read
Ghost in the Shell, I found the anime quite clear. At the end of the seance
though, I heard from other people in the room that they didn't have understood
anything... :)
