I seem to remember reading somewhere that Graves and Tolkien were
neighbours, but did not talk to each other because they mutually
disliked each other's written works.
I have not read The White Goddess although I did track down Graves'
reconstruction of the original Christian Gospel which I found amusing
although rather dull and earnest.
Graves' historical fiction about the emperor Claudius I found enjoyable,
although I discovered them first as the BBC dramatic adaptions. I
suspect that there may be a generation of viewers for whom the emperor
Claudius will forever be Derek Jacobi's interpretation of that role.
