It might. "жэ", if used purposefully as a non-standard spelling, would
cause me, for example, to pronounce the vowel lower, further to the back
and more tense. Such spelling was used in "The Golden Calf" by Ilf and
Petrov, where a typewriter lacking the symbol e was typing "with a
Caucasian accent".
