As I understand it, Irish has a phonemic contrast between velarized and
non-velarized /l/, which could explain why that allophonic variation
doesn't show up. My Arabic-speaking neighbor once told me that when he
was learning English it was hard to remember when to use the two
different kinds of l's, in fact, when he was helping his wife to learn
English, he'd mark which l's should be velarized and which shouldn't on
vocabulary lists. Arabic also has that contrast.
