I've heard Berkeley, MIT and the University of Chicago are tops.
Berkeley, however, doesn't participate in the ongoing syntax debate (it
doesn't recognize it as relevant), so there's nothing really big in syntax
over here. Phonetics and phonology are pretty big. As for applied
linguistics, though... Do you mean, like, fieldwork? Speech therapy? I
don't think I've ever heard anything about it.
