There was a web page that was talking about the orientation of egyptian
hierglyphics. It said that often, if you had a god and a king, for
instance painted on the wall of a tomb, the text that the king is saying
faces towards him, and the speech for the god faces towards the god. The
reason for the vertical writing according to the page, was that it was
more for saving space than anything.
Another interesting thing is that they often in writing would put the most
important words first in a sentence, like the name of the god or king. So,
instead of "the lands of upper and lower egypt, ruled by his greatness
King Seti = King seti, ruled by his greatness, the lands of upper and
lower egypt. In scrolls they often indicated the start of a new phrase
with the first word in red ink.
