Mark Rosenfelder has compiled a series of rules that
give the pronunciation of a word about 85% of the
time:

The rules are long and somewhat complicated. I made a
script in HyperCard that carried out the rules, and
even after taking all day to program, it still made
quite a few errors.
Maybe someday I'll try to make a series of rules that
predict the spelling of a word from it's
pronunciation. Too bad I accidentally deleted
HyperCard...
