Mark Rosenfelder has compiled a series of rules that give the pronunciation of a word about 85% of the time: http://www.zompist.com/spell.html The rules are long and somewhat complicated. I made a script in HyperCard that carried out the rules, and even after taking all day to program, it still made quite a few errors. Maybe someday I'll try to make a series of rules that predict the spelling of a word from it's pronunciation. Too bad I accidentally deleted HyperCard...
