The name is mildly controversial, particularly when it is used for
statistical purposes.  Then it is objected to by people who consider
themselves to be New Zealanders or Europeans, the majority culture.  I
suspect that they are same people who vote for whites-only immigration
policies.  The name is generally used to define a European-descended
English-speaking New Zealander, which can include second-generation
non-British European-descendents.

Pacific Islanders have introduced the phrase 'palagi' (with a velar
nasal) to New Zealand to describe the same ethnic group.

The problem is that English, and other languages, don't have a word,
either noun or adjective, that defines 'a person of (mixed) European
descent, generally English speaker'.

The Doubter's Companion: A Dictionary of Aggressive Common Sense, by
John Ralston Saul, the first gentleman of Canada, defines ANGLO-SAXON
as:

A racial group composed mainly of Celts, Chinese, Germans, Italians,
Ukrainians, French and other peoples who have been conquered by or
immigrated to the English-speaking world.  To blame for everything.
