Yes, "why?" is a pretty common reaction. But I think it's
also easy to stare yourself blind on the fact that it is
conlanging that gets a "why" reaction. There are other
things as well. Just the other day visiting my family I
told my mom that I'd like to attend classes in North Saami
(she's at a company that arranges, among other things,
language courses) and the reaction I got from my sister
(who was sitting nearby) was, you guessed it:

"Why?"
