Well, the beginnings of the study of relatively unimportant languages,
yes (in the grand scheme of things). Remember that the Greeks and
Romans were quite adept at grammar, even though they didn't get
anywhere near the precision of the Sanskrit grammarians, like
Panini. They just didn't care about "unimportant" languages -- only
Greek, and to a lesser extent Latin, were worthy of intellectual study.
