In a way it is a compound, but not of "Al" and "Bert," either of which
is a nickname for Albert. "Albert" is one of those Germanic names that
has been shortened in the passing of time: O.E. AEthel = noble; O.E.
beorht = bright. Interestingly, the surname "Albright" is the same
name with metathesis.
Similarly with Robert: O.H.G. hrod = fame; berht = bright.
English, French, Spanish, et al., have inherited a number of these
names which can easily be checked on line by anyone who knows how to
google: Norbert, Roderick, Herbert, Charles, William, Frederick, etc.
Etymonline.com is a good reference.
