Not sure. "Khazar" is from the Russian name for them, wc in turn is from
the Greek, but i guess it's an attempt at phonetic rendering.
Re: Khazars/Kara'ites: I'm not an expert on neither Judaism or Turkic
languages and peoples, only a part-time Iranist who tries to keep track on
events in that part of the world.
But I asked someone who maybe knew. She said that _probably_ Rabbinic
Khazars eventually became "Yiddishized", while the Kara'ite ones didn't.
The Kara'ite language is in any case a very peculiar Turkic language wich
must have split off early, and it certainly belongs to the same subgroup as
the Khazar language.
