Yes, it is, but it's Michael's native language, so it might
be helpful.

Yes, that was my first impulse too, but this system would mean
that lax (and probably short) vowels would have two-letter
representations while tense (and probably long) vowels would
be single letters. That feels kinda counterintuitive to me.
Especially the schwa /@/, the weakest of vowels, doens't seem
to deserve the effort of two letters |uh|. That's also the
reason why Albanian |ë| for /@/ feels wrong to me.
If Michael's willing to use diacritics in his language, I'd
recommend the following system:
i /I/ í /i/
e /E/ é /e/
u /@/ ú /u/
o /o/
a /A/
Or if you prefer diphthongs...
y /I/ i /i/
e /E/ ei /e/
u /@/ ou /u/
o /o/
a /A/
