They should use the IPA is what I'm saying. And it is true that we can't
expect everyone to know to the IPA. So include a "typical" English (or
whatever language) word for an approximate guide to pronunciation, but also
give the IPA symbol so that those who know it can be (reasonably) certain
that they're pronouncing it as intended.
Not that my posting here will make publishers change their evil ways. ;)
