Mess with everything!
If you're making a language for aliens, it's almost infinitely malleable.
You can add places of articulation, making mid-front and mid-back vowels
as well as the front, back, and mid of humans. You could even make more
than two new places. If you're making a language for humans, look through
an IPA vowel chart for everything pronounceable.
You can do almost anything, but what you choose to do depends on your
goals.
