No, it was rising /i_e/, and later was monophtongized as /e/ (Old French had
even more diphtongues than Modern Portuguese, but later monophtonguized them
all. Hey, it makes me think of a definition for John Cowan's list of essentials:
Old French was essentially Modern Portuguese as spoken by a Frank soldier
pretending to know Latin :) ).
