a slightly off topic thing here...
I remember seeing something about the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and how
because it had been a Byzantine church, when it was taken over by the
Ottomans, instead of defacing the mosaics of saints, they simply covered
them with plaster (which Ataturk had removed when it was converted to a
museum). I always found that a very cool thing, that rather than
destroying the mosaics, which the ottomans could have done, they simply
covered them over.
