Methinketh he meant umlauted graphemes. That is, Ää Öö Üü. Likewise I
wouldn't use a-ring, thorn, ae-ligature or o-slash, or ß. On my own computer
where I have a modified keyboard layout it's no problem for me to enter them,
but on other computers (like the one I'm writing this email on) it doesn't work
without Alt codes.
