Compare fi with fi-ligature in Times, especially an italicised version.
You'll notice that the ligated one looks so much nicer (at least in
print, your screen's DPI resolution may well not be high enough for it
to be that noticeable). (The difference between fl and fl-ligature is
less, but still there.)
