It is not so long ago that the possibility of reconstructing earlier stages of Basque was rather implausible to most people. I guess the realization that Old Aquitaine was close or identical to the ancestor of Basque changed things drastically. (Then there is of course internal reconstruction. I don't know how far one can get with the help of early Latin loans, or how possible it is to sort them out from later Ibero-Romance ones. By comparison Proto-Welsh could be very succesfully reconstructed on the basis of its Latin loans: when Britonic inscriptions from Roman times were eventually found they proved the reconstruction almost entirely correct. /BP B.Philip Jonsson mailto:melroch@mail.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~__ A h-ammen pennuid i phith! \ \ __ ____ ____ _____________ ____ __ __ __ / / \ \/___ \\__ \ /___ _____/\ \\__ \\ \ \ \\ \ / / / / / / / \ / /Melroch\ \_/ // / / // / / / / /___/ /_ / /\ \ / /Melarocco\_ // /__/ // /__/ / /_________//_/ \_\/ /Eowine__ / / \___/\_\\___/\_\ Gwaedhvenn Angelmiel\ \_____/ / a/ /_adar Merthol naun ~~~~~~~~~Cuinondil~~~\_______/~~~\__/~~~Noolendur~~~~~~ || Lenda lenda pellalenda pellatellenda cuivie aiya! || "A coincidence, as we say in Middle-Earth" (JRR Tolkien)
