It is not so long ago that the possibility of reconstructing earlier stages
of Basque was rather implausible to most people. I guess the realization
that Old Aquitaine was close or identical to the ancestor of Basque changed
things drastically.
(Then there is of course internal reconstruction. I don't know how far one
can get with the help of early Latin loans, or how possible it is to sort
them out from later Ibero-Romance ones. By comparison Proto-Welsh could be
very succesfully reconstructed on the basis of its Latin loans: when
Britonic inscriptions from Roman times were eventually found they proved
the reconstruction almost entirely correct.
