Yeah, this sounds like me too, actually. I considered making a language sometime in my early teens, (did in fact create several vaguely-formed naming languages for a series of imaginary countries), but I discount these as Real Conlanging), but directed my linguistic impulse into the study of first French, then German, before beginning my first actual conlang at age 30-something after reading a book on creoles and pidgins and being introduced to some radically different ways of doing things, even than the Kazakh I had spent some years learning.
