In my case, what I really meant was people who write/edit for a living.

I only have anecdotal evidence from personal acquaintances -
professional novel editors and tech writers who don't completely trust
the AHD. I have no idea why. They prefer the OED - that much I can of
course understand, although I'd expect AHD to be more authoritative
for American usage...
