Interesting that to make the singular you have to add on the plural rather than the other way around.... Are other nouns in the language like this too?

Makes sense to me. Actually now that I think about it ... the relationship isn't totally clear. You eat food, but you laugh a laugh. I suppose you can also laugh laughter, but "laughter" can also mean "laughing" ... while "food" does not mean "eating." Hmmm... verb - object - action eat - food - eating laugh - laugh/laughter - laughter/laughing Would these correspond to: tevil - tetevil - x thetre - hethetre - y where x and y are words I don't know in you language? I think it's English that's the problem here. :-) (Ever notice how after you look at the same word too many times, it starts to look very odd? Laugh, laugh, laugh....)
