I meant x and y as nouns though - as in "the eating of the turkey proceeded
very slowly" or "laughter/laughing is good for you."

I believe the "gh" used to be pronounced /x/ (or /G/ ?). Then it changed to
/f/ in some words, since the two are very similar acoustically, and in other
words where it was before a consonant, it went silent, e.g. "bought."
