Although it's not a true rule, in general I suggest that you stick to
"weird symbols". The reason is that statements like "the English d" are
very vague, depend very much on your own dialect, and tend to devolve into
English pronunciation threads.
Learn the weird symbols. Don't use English-equivalent pronunciations.
