I second JS Bang's suggestion that you stick to the "weird symbols".
I think you will find, if you take the time to learn the "weird symbols", that
they are alot more convenient to deal with in most cases. If you insist on
discussing phones generally, I'm afraid you're going to have to learn a rather
weird vocabulary anyway; "apico-alveolar voiced approximant", and then it goes
downhill.
